Background

A year ago, UW Health and UnityPoint Health – Meriter announced their intention to integrate their insurance companies Physicians Plus, Unity Health Insurance and Gundersen Health Plan to create a smarter, more efficient and accessible system of health care. Now, these insurance companies will be combined under the Quartz brand name.

Q: What does this announcement mean?

A: UW Health and UnityPoint Health – Meriter will be operating as a transparent, unified health system. While we remain separate entities, we are now able to develop a more efficient health care system, combining organizational strengths to provide high value, remarkable health care.
 
On the insurance side, Physicians Plus Insurance Corporation becomes the newest affiliate under the Quartz brand, along with Unity Health Insurance and Gundersen Health Plan. This allows us to provide our members and community a more comprehensive offering from highly respected providers and facilities, and to further meet the diverse health plan needs of this community. In the future, UnityPoint Health – Meriter, UW Health and Gundersen Health System providers and facilities, along with many local independent doctors, will be combined into integrated health plan networks.*

Q: Can you share any details for what's included in the agreements?

A: The agreements outline our operating, governing and decision-making structure. It's important to note that details on individual health care service lines have not yet been determined. But, we are actively working on areas like primary care coordination, IT and better use of patient care resources between existing providers and space. We will share updates as they are available.
 

Q: Who made this decision?

A: The boards of all the organizations made the decision to sign the agreements.
 

Q: Are regulatory approvals/reviews required?

A: We have completed all state (OCI) and federal (FTC) regulatory reviews. Our work now is focused on integration via various workgroups.
 

Q: What is Quartz?

A: Quartz manages, administers and supports Unity Health Insurance (Unity), Gundersen Health Plan and Physicians Plus for customers in southwestern Wisconsin and beyond. Unity, Gundersen Health Plan and Physicians Plus have come together under the Quartz brand – a new name in health insurance products. Wherever you see the name Quartz, you will find the same great products and services.
 

Q: Why is this a good thing? How will this control costs?

A: As part of Quartz – Unity Health Insurance, Physicians Plus Insurance Corporation, and Gundersen Health Plan will create more comprehensive and cost-effective networks of care. Being provider owned has proven to be effective in delivering high quality, low cost health care.
 

Q: Will the names Unity, Physicians Plus or Gundersen Health Plan go away?

A: All three insurance plans continue to be licensed and provide health insurance to customers, but now under the Quartz brand. Regular updates will be provided over the next several months as we formalize our plans and create timelines for any changes.
 

Q: Will there be different networks between the different insurance plans under Quartz?

A: Regular updates will be provided over the next several months as we formalize our plans and create timelines for any changes. All three insurance plans continue to be licensed and provide insurance to customers. In the future, UnityPoint Health – Meriter, UW Health and Gundersen Health System providers and facilities, along with many local independent doctors, will be combined into integrated health plan networks.
 

Q: Will there be any name, branding or logo changes?

A: Unity Health Insurance, Physicians Plus Insurance and Gundersen Health Plan will come together under the brand name Quartz.
